The joy of servicing a Vaillant boiler

Although I love my job, I have to admit that the life of a boiler engineer is not always fun. Diagnosing faults, dismantling faulty components & getting covered in radiator sludge is not everyone's cup of tea.

The other week, I took this short video of my workspace whilst on a customer's landing -

As you can see I was well provisioned with coffee and a biscuit!

I try and work as tidily as possible, so arranged on the landing are:

  • the schematics of the boiler

  • wrenches for loosening pipework etc.

  • gas pressure test kit

  • brand new gas valve

Within the airing cupboard, you can see I've removed part of the boiler exhaust ducting to allow better access. There is a bucket collecting some of the sludge I've removed as part of cleaning the magnetic boiler filter.

My initial visit had confirmed that the gas valve in this boiler was faulty. Gas valves regulate the correct pressure for efficient running of your boiler, helping to maintain the correct temperature is reached with minimal waste of energy. This example was an electronic gas valve, which delivers advanced features such as automatic shut-off in case of malfunction or insufficient gas supply.

Once I'd replaced the gas valve, I tested the gas flow and performed a general diagnostic test of the Vaillant boiler - all was working fine!

Once I was home, I dismantled the faulty valve -

The way these parts are manufactured is pretty fascinating. Manufacturers often use neodymium magnets and other cool elements to create reliable components that provide years of trouble free use.

The thing about my job that keeps me engaged is the never-ending aspect of problem solving. Each boiler is different. Each boiler responds to the particular demands of its household and, depending on how it is maintained, will require care & attention to ensure it continues to provide dependable service over its lifespan.

Service your boiler annually! is a phrase I do tend to repeat to all my customers. Please do read the short article I've put together that explains why...

Thanks for reading :)

Someone else, for a change...

I thought this was an excellent video from Heating & Plumbing Doctors (Coventry). It just reiterates what I advise all my customers....
